Indigenous self-identification is voluntary and confidential. It is an opportunity for students and families to identify with their First Nations, Métis or Inuit heritage. It is not necessary to have an Indian Status card, Métis citizenship or an Inuit identification number to self-identify. Indigenous roots are sufficient.

Self-identification helps students fully construct their identity as Francophone and Indigenous. It provides an inclusive learning environment where the cultures, traditions and perspectives of Indigenous peoples are visible and valued.

The Board encourages its students and staff to self-identify. To do so, simply complete a short form. To date, over 390 of our students with Indigenous ancestry have self-identified.

Why?

  • To help students fully build their identity as Francophone and Indigenous
  • To provide an inclusive learning environment where Indigenous peoples' cultures, traditions and perspectives are visible and valued
  • To enable the Conseil scolaire catholique des Grandes Rivières to better determine the choice of resources and ensure the continuity of the integration of cultures, traditions and perspectives of indigenous peoples in our schools.
  • To improve and maintain relationships with Indigenous communities
