Acquired recognition

Prior Learning Assessment and Recognition (PLAR) allows adults to quickly earn credits toward an Ontario Secondary School Diploma (OSSD). Through a formal assessment process, personal and professional experiences gained after leaving high school are assessed. Appropriate credits or equivalencies are awarded based on the outcome of this assessment. Recognition of prior learning is a free service provided to adult learners.

Eligibility

To be eligible for the prior learning assessment and recognition process, adults must:

  • be 18 years of age or over on or before December 31 of the current school year;
  • have left school for at least 10 months;
  • wish to obtain his OSSD.

To make a request

If you wish to apply for recognition of prior learning, please contact one of our secondary schools or one of our adult education centers.

Document required

At the time of your appointment with the center, you will be asked to present the following documents:

  • Official transcript of secondary school grades (You need to contact your old school to get it.)
  • Identity card with photo
  • Proof of residence in Ontario (statement of gas, electricity or telephone account, etc.)
  • Proof of Canadian citizenship, immigrant status or other valid legal status, if applicable
  • Other relevant documents
